When to Visit
Chiang Rai enjoys a tropical climate characterized by two main seasons: the dry season (from November to April) and the wet season (from May to October). The dry season is considered the peak tourist season, with clear skies, sunny days, and lower humidity levels, making it ideal for outdoor activities, exploring temples, and trekking in the surrounding mountains. However, this is also when Chiang Rai experiences the highest number of tourists, resulting in crowded attractions and higher accommodation prices.
On the other hand, the wet season brings frequent rain showers and higher humidity levels, but it also offers fewer crowds and lower prices on accommodation and activities. Plus, the lush green landscapes and vibrant flora make for stunning scenery. If you don’t mind occasional rain showers and want to avoid the crowds, visiting Chiang Rai during the wet season can be a great option. Ultimately, the best time to visit Chiang Rai depends on your preferences for weather, crowds, and budget, but with its rich cultural heritage and stunning natural beauty, Chiang Rai offers something for every traveler regardless of the season.
Transportation
While public transport options in Chiang Rai may not be as extensive as in larger cities, they still offer convenient ways to navigate the city and discover its rich cultural heritage and natural beauty. Lets break it down into a more comprehensive guide for these options:
Tuk-Tuks and Songthaews
Songthaews and Tuk-tuks are the most iconic and popular means of transportation in Chiang Rai. Tuk-tuks are three-wheeled vehicles that can navigate the narrow streets with ease. They are perfect for short distances and give you a taste of local travel. Fares are usually negotiable, so it’s advisable to agree on a price before starting your journey.
Songthaews, or “two-row” trucks, are another common sight. These modified pickup trucks have two bench seats in the back and operate on fixed routes. They are an economical choice for longer distances and can be flagged down anywhere along their route. Songthaews are a great way to travel like a local and experience the city from a unique perspective.
Local Buses
Chiang Rai has a modest but efficient bus system that connects major areas within the city and its outskirts. The green buses operate on a few main routes, making them a viable option for budget-conscious travelers. While the schedules and stops might not be as well-marked as in larger cities, locals are generally helpful in pointing you in the right direction.
Taxis and Ride-Hailing Services
For those who prefer more comfort and convenience, taxis are readily available throughout Chiang Rai. While metered taxis are not as common as in Bangkok, they can be found at major hotels, bus stations, and the airport. It’s advisable to negotiate the fare before starting your trip if the taxi doesn’t use a meter. In recent years, ride-hailing services like Grab have become increasingly popular in Chiang Rai. Using a smartphone app, you can easily book a ride and pay electronically, ensuring a hassle-free experience. This service is particularly useful for tourists who might face language barriers.
Bicycle and Motorbike Rentals
For the more adventurous travelers, renting a bicycle or motorbike offers a flexible and fun way to explore Chiang Rai at your own pace. Several rental shops in the city provide a range of bicycles and motorbikes at reasonable rates. This option allows you to venture off the beaten path and discover hidden gems that are not accessible by public transport.
Airport Transfers
Chiang Rai International Airport (Mae Fah Luang Airport) is the main gateway for travelers arriving by air. The airport is about 8 kilometers from the city center, and several transportation options are available for airport transfers. Taxis and ride-hailing services like Grab offer convenient and direct routes to your accommodation. Additionally, some hotels provide shuttle services for their guests.
Tips for Using Public Transportation in Chiang Rai
- Negotiation is Key: For tuk-tuks and songthaews, always agree on the fare before starting your journey.
- Have Small Change: It’s helpful to carry small denominations for bus fares and local transport.
- Use Translation Apps: Language barriers can be a challenge, so having a translation app can ease communication with drivers.
- Plan Ahead: Research and plan your routes in advance, especially if using local buses or songthaews with less clearly marked stops and schedules.
Accommodation
Phowadol Resort:
Finding a central location for our daily explorations was top priority in Chiang Rai, luckily we found Phowadol Resort . While it used to be one of the top luxury resorts (many years ago) it has since been allowed to run down quite a bit. However, it’s still adequate, decently priced and well located. Where to Eat
Lalitta Cafe
This cafe has recently been thrusted into the social media spot light and for good reason. The entire cafe makes you feel as if you have been transported into a fairytale garden. The jungle atmosphere with the fairy garden decor and the sun rays streaming through are nothing short of a fantasy novel setting.
Cat n Cup Cafe
If you have a love for the furry friends that purr, then this cafe is a good place for you to check out while in town. Please keep in mind they have a limit to the people allowed in at a time, and you shouldn’t pick the cats up. Let them roam and explore on their own and they will come to you.
Kalae Cafe
We stumbled upon this cafe while riding the scooter around town and really glad we did. The food is great, prices are reasonable and it is run by an adorable family.
Night Bazar
If you’re anything like me then you want to spend a night (or three) eating local food surround say locals and visitors alike. There is no better place than the local night bazar. A courtyard surrounded by local food stalls on both sides offers a wide variety of food choice for everyone to come together and share. I highly recommend ordering the hotpot while here.
Sabroso
If you are in need of a little break from Thai food (like my husband) you can instead enjoy a little fiesta at Sabroso. This Mexican restaurant was a pleasant surprise of high quality authentic food. Prices are pretty good and the food is very filling.
Library (bar)
If you want a unique event experience, visit this bar / music club. The theme is a library and the “books” run floor to ceiling. Top tip: check in online and get a free shot wheel! 12 fruit shots completely free.
