Ljubljana & Lake Bled, Slovenia: How to Spend a Day in Two Cities

Ljublijana, Slovenia

My partner and I decided to take a day trip to Slovenia from Klagenfurt. I wanted to visit Ljubljana and Lake Bled! The biggest travel tip is make sure you bring your passport ! Even if you have a visa or an EU card they still require a passport. If you don’t have it you will get a ticket with a big fine in the mail. Lets take a look at what we cover in this mini guide:

Things to do in Lake Bled:

Lake bled is a beautiful mountain lake with a castle up high on a hill over looking the lake below. My biggest recommendation is to rent a row boat and row around in the sunshine. You can row over to Lake Bled Island. We made it there and back in about an hour. That included getting a gelato on the island before heading back. There isn’t a ton on the island but there’s a cute church and nice views. After we got back to the mainland we stopped for some food and just relaxed in the sun.

Things to do in Ljubljana:

After our first half of the day was spent in Lake Bled, we decided to drive an hour to the capital city of Ljubljana. We wanted to spend the rest of our day and evening there. Center district is where you will find the world famous Tripple bridge. Now don’t expect to find it empty. It is in the city center and there’s a ton going on around this area. The bridges are still very cool to see but I almost didn’t recognize them when we first arrived in the square.

We had a lot of fun just walking around Ljubljana without any direction or plan. While wandering we found a market and did a little shopping. We stumbled upon the dragon bridge which is also along the canal.

Butcher Bridge:

One of my favorite things we found is Butcher Bridge. It’s along the canal and is covered with locks from all the travelers to visit the city. I know these bridges can be found in lots of different cities now. However I still think this is a cool trend and always enjoy when I find one.

What to Eat in Ljubljana:

We grabbed more ice cream at this really cool place called Ice Wave. They makes it on a cold stone in front of you with whatever ingredients you choose. You can also get crepes. They were very friendly and the ice cream was delicious!

We ended our trip with grabbing a beer at a restaurant outside right next to the canal. It was a great spot to watch the sunset.

I would take another day trip here if we get the chance. I know there’s tons of stuff we didn’t get to see. However we would love if anyone has gone and has some recommendations! Hopefully we can visit again in the future and take more time to truly explore the city.
