9 Places to Eat in Milan, Italy

As you can imagine, we did not hold back when it came to eating in Milan. There’s a reason Julia Roberts traveled to Italy for the “Eat” portion in Eat Pray Love. I truly believe that calories do not count when in the land of pizza, pasta, pastries and gelato (when you get back home you might beg to differ) but if you don’t choose to fully indulge while in this food heaven, when else should you? Buy the bigger pair of pants my dear and enjoy every last bite babes! Now that that is settled, let’s dive into the top 9 places to eat in Milan!

Bar Rubin :

We stumbled upon this place while looking for another restaurant actually and it was closed so we decided to try Rubin because we were so hungry. Im so glad we did! Pizza, pasta, white wine +2 bottles of water for €29.50. Most of the pastas on the menu were very heavy so the chef came out to ask exactly what we liked and made it to order. I ordered “naked” pasta and added oil, salt and Parmesan. So happy we did it this way, it was as cooked perfectly. The noodles were tender and soft and paired with the oil and parmesan was amazing.

My partner got the pizza margarita and it was also splendid. The cheese was thick and the crust was the perfect crunchiness and thin. The high point for me however was the tomato sauce, this is how I tell if a pizza is just good or something special. And this sauce made it great! €29.50 Address: Via Santa Maria Segreta, 7/9, 20123 Milano MI, Italy

Obicà mozzarella bar :

It’s a bit expensive but was expected to be in this price range for its location. The view of the cathedral right next to you is beautiful. The service was alright, definitely the least friendly of all the places we ate at during this trip. The food was not a large portion to be honest which was disappointing but it was very, very tasty. We ordered mozzarella balls, only 3 pieces but they came with a fried side (€6) , I ordered the Tortelloni pasta, which was also portion size a bit disappointing, only 4/5 pieces, however they were full of flavor and I savored every bite (€14).

My partner ordered a burger and he was very happy with it, comes with a delicious sauce and side of steak fries, only thing he wasn’t happy with is that it doesn’t come with a top bun so you have to eat it with a fork and knife (€17.5) , cocktail €12 , Hugo €12 =€70 Address: Piazza Duomo Food Hall 7° Piano – Rinascente, P.za del Duomo, 20121 Milano MI, Italy

Fancy Toast:

This was the one place I knew I wanted to try before we came to Milan. I was so excited and boy did it deliver in every way possible. We went right at opening time and didn’t realize that they have a limited menu for the first two hours, but the wonderful woman said if we could give her 20-30 mins to get set up she would be happy to make our order for us early. Highly recommend to make a reservation due to it popularity.

I ordered a fancy coffee which was a Moroccan coffee with milk foam, coco powder, cinnamon and hazelnuts (€2), my partner ordered a peach ice tea (€3), we decided to split the rainbow pancakes …. these were straight out of heaven. I cannot recommend these enough, the custard paired with the fresh food and the fluffy as cloud pancakes was just perfection (€6), I ordered the hangover open toast, which is soft bread covered in avocado spread, fresh grilled chicken, delicious crunchy bacon and a fried egg (€11), my partner ordered a closed BLT and he said it was wonderful (€8) Address: Piazza della Trivulziana, 5, 20126 Milano MI, Italy

Fatto con amore:

This adorable family run gelato shop is a must! The guy was so friendly and gave us basically a sample of every kind of gelato they had. He was wonderful with recommendations on how to pair them as well. We had  6 scoops (4 in a cup and 2 in cone) for €6.80 – My partner had Greek yogurt, lemon, raspberry and peach , while I also had the Greek yogurt and peach. If I have to recommend one…. GET THE PEACH….WOW!! Address: Corso Magenta, 30, 20121 Milano MI, Italy

Cinder Mount:

This is your typical hole in the wall find that we love so much. Tasty food for great prices. We enjoyed pizza margarita €6 , calzone € 7.50 , tiramisu €4.00, water €1.5 and beer €4.50 . Sweet little old man and made fresh in the pizza wood burning oven, in about 7 mins top.  Address: Viale Monte Ceneri, 58, 20155 Milano MI, Italy

Panificio & Pasticceria Maria Vailati:

This is the perfect place if you want an authentic Italian pastry shop! We choose it because we could always smell something amazing coming even a block away. This one was established in 1963 and I don’t think a thing has changed since. You have a wide assortment of sweets and savory treats to choose some. I recommend getting a spread and enjoy it all! We ordered 13 pastries and it only cost €9!

Madera Milano:

We ended up here after deciding that we would take a walk and find somewhere to eat (I must say this is my favorite method of finding random restaurants but Milan was not very successful using this method). We finally found Madera and we’re too hungry to keep going. I was happy that the food was quite tasty even if the portions were a bit small again. We ordered two white wines , spaghetti €7 , tortellini €12 and it cost €27 in total.

La Bottega Del Gelato:

On our third day after visiting the cemetery it was very humid and the sun was making us a bit sluggish so we decided to grab a siesta time gelato. My partner found this place that opened in 1964. I must say it was great! The coffee was spot on and the surprise winner for me was the almond! My partner got chocolate and amaretto. All four scoops cost €6.40.

Al Vesuvio:

I really wanted pasta for my last dinner in Milan so I looked up local places close to our AirBnB and found this hidden gem. The prices were phenomenal. Spaghetti for €4, risotto for €4, a calzone €5 and a liter of white wine for €5. The food wasn’t anything too amazing but it was all decent. If you’re looking for bargain price for huge amounts of food this is a good place to try.
