Here is what we will cover in this article!

Location & Accessibility

Description of the hotel’s location

Porto Kaza is located in Sitia, which is on the north eastern side of the island. Sitia is one of the least “touristy” places on the island and you can tell that it is a living and breathing town full of locals. Sitia as a town, was built up in Venetian times, destroyed and later rebuilt by the Turks, with just a few signs of this history remaining. The region, however, still provides numerous clues and monuments to the area’s early history. Porto Kaza is located higher on a hill but is walkable to the main harbor down below.

Proximity to transportation hubs, attractions, and amenities

The first thing you need to know is that you absolutely MUST rent a car when visiting Sitia. Public transport is practically non-existent on the island and where it does run, it tends to be very unreliable. There are plenty of rental places at and near the airport so renting a car shouldn’t be an issue. We used SurPrice car rentals and paid €60 for 4 days and full insurance ! However, Porto Kaza is located very nicely for the actual harbor town of Sitia and you can walk to all the restaurants and shops below.

There are also plenty of things within driving distance of Porto Kaza. We can recommend checking out Toplou Monastery, Via Palm Forest and beach and the deserted Dionsyos Greek Village

Workspace availability and quality

While Porto Kaza doesn’t have any dedicated workspace per se, we had no trouble finding places in our room and on our terrace to get things done. My favorite was the lounge chair that folded up and down to a chair our bed lounger. We did have a small table inside as well but we preferred to be out and enjoy the sun.

Internet speed and reliability

We did not have too many issues with the speed or reliability for internet at Porto Kaza. I think one day of our full trip there may have been issues but they were resolved promptly and we didn’t lose out on our ability to get things done in a timely manner.

Noise levels and privacy

When we visited in 2022, there was a bit of construction being down around the area. However even with this, it wasn’t overly loud, it didn’t last the full day and we never were kept awake by the noise at any times. Other than that, the noise would be practically nonexistent for a future stay as they have the place very well protected.

Privacy is also very good as you are up above the surrounding area and can look out but no one is looking down over you. There is an entrance way and you go back further for the rooms so you have total privacy. For shared spaces like the pool you may run into other guest but that would be it.

Facilities & Services

On-site facilities such as gyms, pools, co-working spaces, etc.

Porto Kaza does have pool. Sadly during our stay it was not working so we didn’t get to experience it first-hand. However, they have since updated their website and this is what it should look like if you visit in the future. While, there is not a gym on-site but if you plan to explore the island you will get your exercise from that instead!

Quality of services provided (housekeeping, front desk, etc.)

Hands down, the best part of our stay at Porto Kaza was the hospitality and welcoming nature of the family who runs it. Before we even arrived they were so helpful with directions and making sure we had everything we needed. In our room was the best welcome basket of fresh local and homemade items (local honey, cookies, bread, jams, fruits and veggies), plus a bottle of Ouzo waiting for us! Anytime we had questions they were prompt to respond with plenty of help tips or recommendations. They even gave us a map with all the things drawn onto it for our day trips. During our stay they also brought us up fresh homemade food plates that they were making as a family. Our final night we went for dinner with the daughter and she took us to an amazing local spot. It was truly like visiting your own family!

Value for Money

Pricing compared to similar accommodations in the area

Porto Kaza was an absolute steal compared to many of the other accommodation options in the nearby area. They were very new when we visited and just getting started so naturally their prices were a bit cheaper. Today they still seem to be among the mid-range for prices but with everything they offer, location proximity, a pool and the most hospitable host you could ever ask for, I don’t think you could find a better deal!

Sustainability & Eco- Friendly Focuses

Impact on the local community and environment

As this is a family run hotel, you know that you are helping to support the locals. Their family is very active in the community and had wonderful recommendations for where to eat, to shop etc with other locals.

I do not know about their personal sustainable practices, but they are very transparent in their communication and I am sure they would be willing to share more if asked about it!

Our Experience & Thoughts

Personal experience and impressions

We absolutely fed our stay at Porto Kaza. The accommodation, facilitates, special personal touches and just incredible Greek hospitality would have us visiting again in a heart beat! If you are wanting an authentic Greek experience on Crete and wish to stay a bit further from the touristy side of the island, we can completely recommend you to visit Sitia and stay at Porto Kaza!
