Additionally, the dry season is ideal for exploring Hanoi’s historic sites, wandering through its charming old quarters, and enjoying outdoor activities such as walking around Hoan Kiem Lake or visiting nearby attractions like Ha Long Bay.

On the other hand, the wet season, from May to September, brings heavy rainfall and higher humidity levels, which can make outdoor activities less enjoyable. However, visiting during this time offers the opportunity to experience Hanoi’s lush green landscapes and fewer crowds, as well as lower prices on accommodation and tours. Ultimately, the best time to visit Hanoi depends on your preferences for weather, crowds, and budget. Whether you choose to visit during the dry season for pleasant weather and lively atmosphere or during the wet season for a more budget-friendly experience, Hanoi’s rich history, vibrant culture, and delicious cuisine are sure to captivate you whenever you decide to visit.

Transportation

Public transportation in Hanoi offers convenient and affordable options for travelers to navigate the city’s bustling streets and explore its cultural attractions. The city boasts a comprehensive public transport network, including buses, taxis, motorbike taxis (xe om), and the iconic cyclos. The bus system is extensive, with routes covering most areas of the city and beyond, making it a popular choice for budget-conscious travelers. Additionally, Hanoi’s rapid transit system, the Hanoi Metro, is currently under development and expected to provide further convenience once completed.

For shorter distances, travelers can opt for taxis or motorbike taxis, which are readily available throughout the city. The cyclo, a traditional Vietnamese bicycle taxi, offers a unique and leisurely way to explore Hanoi’s historic Old Quarter and other tourist attractions. While traffic congestion can be an issue during peak hours, especially in the city center, Hanoi’s public transportation system provides a reliable and efficient means of getting around, allowing visitors to experience the city’s rich culture, history, and culinary delights with ease.

Accommodation

Hanoi Graceful Hotel:

We wanted to find an accommodation that was centrally located and gave us easy walking capabilities to explore the city. Hanoi Graceful Hotel was a perfect location for us and the owners were incredibly friendly and helpful. They will arrange airport pick up and drop off as well which we recommend! They also offer a breakfast with more of a focus on some traditional as well as international options.

Where to Eat

The Note Coffee

We recommend sitting at one of the upper floors and getting a window set if one is available. Whether you’re looking to relax, connect with fellow travelers, or simply enjoy the quirky decor, Note Cafe offers an unforgettable experience that encapsulates the spirit of Hanoi.

Hanoi Train street Coffee

While the train street is famous mostly for the train that passes inches from the cafes, this is also a great place to try the local egg coffee. Originating in Hanoi, this creamy concoction combines rich, aromatic Vietnamese coffee with a velvety blend of whipped egg yolk, sugar, and condensed milk, creating a luxurious, custard-like foam. Served hot or iced, egg coffee offers a perfect balance of sweetness and bitterness, making it a standout treat for coffee enthusiasts.

Banh Mi 25

Bánh Mì 25 in Hanoi is a beloved destination for locals and tourists alike, renowned for its delicious and authentic Vietnamese sandwiches. Located in the heart of the Old Quarter, Bánh Mì 25 offers a mouthwatering variety of bánh mì, a traditional Vietnamese baguette filled with savory meats, fresh herbs, pickled vegetables, and a touch of flavorful sauces. Each sandwich is crafted with care, ensuring a perfect balance of textures and flavors that tantalize the taste buds. Whether you’re grabbing a quick bite during a busy day of sightseeing or looking to experience a quintessential Vietnamese street food, Bánh Mì 25 promises a delightful culinary adventure in Hanoi.

Hiphub Cafe

This is a cute and trendy cafe with a few different floors with different activities and themes. They have quite an assortment of interesting drink options and different flavors as well. It has a great view of the St Joseph Cathedral upstairs as well.

King Roti

The best place to find the traditional Roti buns located in the Hang Gai district. You can choose from a variety of flavored fillings such as coffee chocolate, coffee butter, vanilla or even matcha. It has an open kitchen to where you can see the pastry chefs making the big and fluffy Roti being made fresh. Get one to go as you wander the streets.

Bun Bo Hue Co Ly

I was craving som Pho and we stumbled across this place while walking around some back streets. There were a ton of locals eating so we decided to give it a try. The owners are kind and speak some English. They ask to make sure you know what spicy level you want to start with but there are a lot of spices on the table.

Local shops and Stalls

Many of the locals have shops on the winding streets which offer an overwhelming amount of local and imported goodies. This was one of my favorite places to find new and unique treats to discover. Not one that we chose was disappointing!

Best Bars

Alchemist

If you have an enthusiasm for cocktails then you need to check out the Alchemist bar in Hanoi. It offers a wide range of classic cocktails and specialty drinks with a very cool menu. While on the pricier side, the drinks are very tasty and you get some small snacks at the table. It was a mix between upscaled and casual dress but it does seem like one of the nicer bars in the city. Make sure you check out the decor as well with the wizardly theme continues from the menu and drink names.

Cloud Sky Bar

Experience the breathtaking views and vibrant atmosphere of Cloud Sky Bar, a premier destination in Hanoi for panoramic cityscapes and luxurious nightlife. Perched high above the bustling streets, this stylish rooftop bar offers unparalleled vistas of Hanoi’s skyline, making it a favored spot for both locals and tourists alike. Sip on expertly crafted cocktails or indulge in a selection of fine wines and spirits as you soak in the spectacular sunset or the glittering city lights after dark. With its modern decor, live music, and impeccable service, Cloud Sky Bar provides an unforgettable setting for socializing and celebrating special occasions. The staff was incredibly friendly, gave us a round of 6 free shots and the traditional hats to wear while we waited out the rain.

Tom’s Bar

We got stuck in a rain storm when we were heading to the famous “beer street” of Hanoi, so unfortunately we didn’t get to explore too many of the bars on this street. Due to the storm, we were somewhat stuck at Tom’s Bar and thankfully this was a good place to get stuck! We met some other expats who had been traveling and sat while watching the rain pour down. The staff were incredibly friendly, attentive and even the locals were welcoming. Prices were quite reasonable for it being such a popular street.

Temples / Churches

St Joseph’s Cathedral

St. Joseph’s Cathedral, located in the heart of Hanoi, Vietnam, is a stunning example of neo-Gothic architecture and a significant religious landmark. Tran Quoc Pagoda

We didn’t personally make it this temple sadly, the weather was less than cooperative during our stay. However, we wanted to add it to the list as it is a recommended and popular place to visit. Hopefully next visit we will be able to cross it off our list as well as add new places to our guide!

This is where many people will try the traditional egg coffee, which is a must do at least once while you are in country.

Thang Long Water Puppet Show
