Klungkung might be one of the more undiscovered regions on the island of Bali. It offers a look into the remote life of locals untouched by tourism. Located in the southeastern part of the island, Klungkung is renowned for its historical sites like the ancient Klungkung Palace, as well as its vibrant arts and crafts scene. Visitors can explore traditional Balinese villages, discover stunning temples, and enjoy picturesque landscapes, including lush rice terraces and serene beaches. With its unique charm and lesser-known attractions, Klungkung is an intriguing destination for those seeking an authentic Balinese experience away from the crowds. However, be prepared for an adventure as it is much more off-road exploring than the rest of the island.
this post contains experiences from both 2019 and 2024. I have tried to update as many locations that have changed or closed down since my first visit but as Bali continues to change, these may not always remain up to date.

When to Visit
Klungkung enjoys a tropical climate with two primary seasons: the dry season and the wet season. The dry season typically spans from April to October, characterized by sunny days, lower humidity, and minimal rainfall, making it the peak tourist season.
This period is ideal for outdoor activities such as exploring historical sites, visiting traditional markets, and enjoying water sports along the coast. However, it’s essential to note that accommodation prices may be higher, and popular attractions can be crowded during this time.
On the other hand, the wet season, from November to March, brings occasional rainfall and higher humidity levels but also offers fewer crowds and lower prices on accommodation and activities. While some outdoor activities may be affected by the rain, the lush green landscapes and vibrant cultural events during this time can provide a unique and immersive experience for travelers.
Ultimately, the best time to visit Klungkung depends on your preferences for weather, crowds, and budget. Whether you choose to visit during the dry season for optimal weather conditions or during the wet season for a more budget-friendly experience, Klungkung’s rich cultural heritage and natural beauty are sure to captivate you whenever you decide to visit.
Transportation
Klungkung is a little over an hour from Ubud. One of the most common forms of public transport in Klungkung is the motorbike taxi, locally known as “ojeks,” which are readily available for short trips and can navigate the town’s narrow streets with ease.
Renting a scooter is by far the best option financially and practicality for the more remote area. This also helps by providing flexibility and independence to explore Klungkung and its surroundings at their own pace. Ride sharing such as Uber or Grab do not work well in this area. Do not depend on these if you’re planning to stay overnight in the region.
WARNING: This is also not an area that Google Maps can always be reliable.
We got out in the jungle with our scooter, scaling down a mountain for 2.5 hours thanks to Google Maps. We were trying to get to the Monkey Bar at Bella Vista after visiting Gembleng waterfall. Maps said it wasn’t a far journey at all. The roads became less and less civilized and we ended up on a “road” that may have been a roads years ago, but clearly hasn’t been used in a long time. We had to climb over and under fallen branches, slide down grassy hills, balance the bike on rocky and eroded pathways and even find a local family to get their help to chainsaw a huge fallen tree.
Our biggest recommendation is that if the road looks a bit sketchy, do not go down it. Find another way even if it adds 10-15 minutes to your travel or else you could be stuck for hours in the jungle.

Dana Ricefield Villa:
We knew we needed accommodation that was in a good location to travel to our daily explorations and we found Dana Ricefield Villa. The owner is very nice and super helpful with anything we needed including renting us his scooter. Breakfast is included and its very good.

Honestly, this was one of the best gelatos I have ever had. The mint chocolate chip, peanut butter and cheesecake were all incredible.

Tirta Gangga – Water Temple

- Insider Tip: Opening time on Google is 8 am, but the temple opens at 7 am. Get here early so you can enjoy this place with a smaller crowd.
- Entrance: 40k IDR per person,
- Use of the pool: 20K IDR per person.
- Opening Times: 7am – 4pm
Lempuyang Temple
Lempuyang Temple, one of Bali’s oldest and most revered temples, is a must-visit destination for travelers seeking spiritual enlightenment and breathtaking views. Located on the slopes of Mount Lempuyang in East Bali, this iconic temple, also known as the “Gateway to Heaven,” offers panoramic vistas of the lush landscapes and the majestic Mount Agung. The temple complex features seven sanctuaries, with the famous split gate providing an Instagram-worthy photo opportunity. Visitors can embark on a scenic trek to reach the higher temples, soaking in the serene atmosphere and the cultural significance of this sacred site.
- Clothing: Keep in mind that most temples require you to wear appropriate clothing and some will have the wraps to cover in before you are allowed to enter.
- I recommend going early in the morning for sunrise and to beat the crowds. Everyone gets in a line to go take the photos one at a time.
- Photography: They have people there to take the “water reflection” photo but there’s actually no water, they use a mirror to get the photo !
Top Activities
Gembleng Waterfall
Located in the Karangasem Regency, this picturesque waterfall is renowned for its cascading tiers, crystal-clear pools, and tranquil surroundings. Bugbug Karangasem
We stumbled across this viewpoint on the road towards Virgin Beach. It is part of a large camping ground area where it seems like you can tent camp or even bring a camper or van if you wish. There are many cows roaming around the sides of the road so be aware when you a driving.
