Krka National Park: Exploring Croatia’s Natural Wonder
Krka National Park, Croatia:
Krka National Park is a stunning escape from reality into a world of vibrant colours and the power of nature at its most magnificent. Home to the incredible Skradinski Buk waterfall, a day trip to Krka National Park from Split is unmissable! It’s one of those experiences that are so worth it – the price, the hike, everything. The majesty of nature, the vivid blues and greens, the sounds of rushing water, it’s breathtaking.
It cost around 200 kuna (€30) to buy a full day park ticket that will allow you to visit all the different areas of the park. If you want to get the most out of the trip I again highly recommend a car, as some of the locations are 20 minutes driving distance and there is no in park transportation. If you want to get to the main waterfall you can go to entrance 1 and take a boat ride right to the location of the main falls. We opted to park next to the closest entrance and rent bikes to complete the 4 km trek.
Once you reach the “main space” they have lots of little stands with food, drinks and souvenirs. There were plenty of families hanging out here enjoying the falls from the distance. Krka was on my bucket list because I had always wanted to swim in the Skradinski Buk pools. To my dismay, they have banned swimming starting at the beginning of this year – I was devastated. However, the gorgeous falls still are such a beautiful sight it’s worth the trip.

TRANSPORTATION:
Car:
We were fortunate enough to have a car and so naturally we parked in the closest location we could find. There are many entrances and of course depending on which location you want to visit you can decide what area is best for you.
Bus:
It’s so easy to get from Split to Krka. The simplest way is to take a bus from Split bus station which is easy to find right on the harbour. It’s a bit longer this way, roughly one and a half hour’s drive. Buses run most hours – check the timetable on getbybus.com. You can also book tickets there which might be worth doing for peace of mind! Bear in mind that the destination name is not Krka but Skradin, the nearest town and name of the entrance the bus will take you to. Once you get to the Skradin entrance you will take a boat ride to the main event!
The biggest tip…
Go as early as possible. Standard stuff – it gets busier and busier! One of the earliest routes is catching the bus at 8:00 to arrive at 9:30 and the boat was at 10:00. This will get you into the park by around 10:20. I wouldn’t advise going much later if you want to get some amazing photos that don’t include 100 of your closest strangers! We drove ourselves and went even earlier than this, and it was just quiet enough for us around this time but by the time we were leaving the main falls, hundreds of people from other tours were walking in (no thank you)! So I mean it when I say, I know waking up with the sun can be tough, but then again it’s definitely a place worth getting up early for!
Tour options:
Roski Slap Waterfall
If you have extra time you could take a boat trip to Roski Slap Waterfall. (You can also drive there yourself which is what we did). The excursion is four hours and includes a visit to Visovac Island, a ride through the Među greed canyon and an hour at the falls and surrounding walking trails. We opted to go ourselves and spent a few hours swimming in the designated section and then enjoying the sunny afternoon with a picnic by the small streams. Stradinski Buk definitely has the biggest wow factor so I’d probably only recommend doing this trip if you have lots of time or are staying in the Skradin area.
More to do in Croatia
From Roski Slap you could also do another boat trip to the Krka Monastery and fortresses in another two and a half hours.
This was a perfect day trip adventure for us as we traveled from Split and made our way up to Rijeka. If you have extra time in Split, this is definitely one of my top recommendations to spend one of your days doing! For more recommendations please check out my full Split review!
