When to Visit

Lombok enjoys a tropical climate with two primary seasons: the dry season and the wet season.

The dry season typically spans from May to September, characterized by sunny days, lower humidity, and minimal rainfall, making it the peak tourist season. This period is ideal for outdoor activities such as hiking Mount Rinjani, exploring pristine beaches, and snorkeling or diving in crystal-clear waters.

However, it’s essential to note that accommodation prices may be higher, and popular attractions can be crowded during this time.

On the other hand, the wet season, from November to March, brings occasional rainfall and higher humidity levels but also offers fewer crowds and lower prices on accommodation and activities. While some outdoor activities may be affected by the rain, the lush green landscapes and vibrant marine life during this time can provide a unique and immersive experience for travelers.

Ultimately, the best time to visit Lombok depends on your preferences for weather, crowds, and budget. Whether you choose to visit during the dry season for optimal weather conditions or during the wet season for a more budget-friendly experience, Lombok’s natural beauty and diverse attractions await you year-round.

Transportation on Lombok

One of the most common forms of public transport in Lombok is the “bemo,” which are small minivans that serve as shared taxis and operate on fixed routes around the island. These bemos are a cost-effective option for short-distance travel and provide a glimpse into local life.

Additionally, travelers can use ride-hailing services like Gojek or Grab, which offer affordable and convenient transportation options to explore nearby attractions or travel to other parts of Lombok.

For longer distances or traveling between towns, renting a scooter or motorbike is a popular choice among visitors, providing flexibility and independence to explore Lombok and its surroundings at their own pace.

While public transport options in Lombok may not be as extensive as in larger cities, they still offer convenient ways to navigate the island and discover its natural beauty, pristine beaches, and vibrant culture.

Accommodation in Lombok

El Tropico:

We were so fourteen to find El Tropico when we needed to quickly rebook a hotel for our stay in Lombok. It was a blessing in disguise ! El Tropico Boutique Hotel offers an exclusive retreat for travelers seeking luxury and tranquility in a tropical paradise. Nestled just steps away from pristine beaches, this boutique hotel is renowned for its elegant design, personalized service, and serene ambiance. Guests can indulge in well-appointed rooms with modern amenities, enjoy gourmet dining at the on-site restaurant, and relax by two sparkling pools. With its prime location near popular attractions and activities, El Tropico Boutique Hotel provides an ideal base for exploring the natural beauty and vibrant culture of Lombok.

Nativo:

Originally we were supposed to stay at Nativo until I reached out for help the day before we arrived. They took half the day to respond and told us they would not be able to accommodate us as they were in a land dispute with locals. They gave no warning, they never tried to reach out to us but they charged our credit card 3 days prior to our arrival. In the future I do not know if their situation will change, but due to the lack of customer service we would be hesitant to return. The facilities looked wonderful so it is disappointing.

Treehouse

This unique restaurant and bar offers the feelings of dining in a jungle treehouse overlooking the streets in central Kuta. Tis place is popular so a reservation is recommended. There are many unique seating options including swings. We only came for a drink and dessert.

Etc

Kuta is full of amazing cafes and restaurants. We wanted to try so many more than we had time for but cannot wait to return and try as many as possible. Here are just a few extra that were near our hotel and looked like a great place to try.

Best Bars on Lombok

Curfew

If you are in the mood for some craft beers then this is the place for you. In the morning and earl part of the day, the front serves as a cafe with specialty coffee brews. Midday and evening the back garden area is a craft beer garden.

We didn’t visit many bars on this trip. Hopefully when we return to the island in the future we can provide more recommendations for you. If you have any bars that you have visited and wish to share with others, please leave them in the comments below!

Beach Clubs on Lombok

El Tropico

Our hotel is open for people who wish to come eat or relax at the beautiful pool areas! We didn’t visit any beach clubs on this trip as we had everything we needed at El Tropico Hotel.

Hopefully when we return to the island in the future we can provide more recommendations for you. If you have any beach clubs that you have visited and wish to share with others, please leave them in the comments below!

Waterfalls

As we did not venture outside of the Kuta area on the island this trip, we did not visit the waterfalls we had planned to do during our trip. I wanted to include the list here for reference though as a guide to the ones we had planned to visit in hopes that it can still help you plan your own trip.

Best Beaches on Lombok

Selong Belanak

Selong Belanak is an ideal spot for surfing, swimming, and sunbathing. This beautiful beach is also home to local fishing communities, offering a glimpse into traditional Lombok life. With its breathtaking sunsets, laid-back vibe, and accessibility to charming beachfront cafes and accommodations, Selong Belanak provides a perfect escape for those seeking relaxation and natural beauty.  This is also the place that the water buffalo tend to migrate back home through. Sadly we did not experience this during our visit in 2024. The locals said it has not been a frequent occurrence for a few years now. However, even without the buffalo, it is a great place to watch the sunset.

  1. I’ve not heard of Lombok, but it looks beautiful! Which kind of traveler would you consider it best suited for – younger, families, or the older crowd?

    1. I truly think Lombok has something for everyone. I went as a couple but we definitely saw friend groups, full families and there are soooo many activities for all types of travelers (adventure, realization, nature, etc). It is on my list to go back and explore because it’s much bigger than we expected and there is still so much for us to do!

  2. We were sad we missed visiting Lombok when we were in Bali. But we know we have lots to see on a return visit. We definitely would plan to visit the waterfalls. Good to know we have to plan enough time to venture outside of Kuta.

    1. Yes, we were surprised by how large the island actually was and therefore I feel like we truly didn’t get to experience half of the things we wanted to do! The nature on this island is beautiful and it’s a perfect place to relax or adventure. Plan enough time for sure if you want to explore the different areas.

  3. I didn’t make it to Lombak on my trip to Bali but I’d love to go on a return visit. That egg chair at El Tropico Boutique Hotel looks heavenly. Did Nativo refund you? I would be livid at being both charged and canceled on.

    1. I hope you can make it there on the next visit, and yes! El Tropico is definitely worth visiting:0 we would gladly stay there again. Nativo was dealt with through the booking agency finally but it was a hassle for sure.
