Rijeka, Croatia: Discovering the Hidden Gems of the Adriatic Coast

Rijeka:

Before you travel to Rijeka and leap into the water, let’s get in touch with the city of Rijeka. Not only is Rijeka Old Town the most interesting area of the city but also the most visited due to many cultural remains, like the foundations of Roman walls, the walls of buildings, the remains of Roman thermae and gates. It’s a much less touristy city than it’s counterparts Split and Dubronovik, but sometimes getting away from the hustle and bustle and taking a moment to relax in a quieter place is exactly what you need. If you could use a recovery day or two, then head to Rijeka and check out these sites!

If you are looking to find the best accommodation in Rijeka then look no further. Type in your dates and it will give you all the best options available!

SITES in Rijeka:

Trsat Castle:

Visiting Trsat Castle is particularly interesting and as it is located on the hill 138 meters above sea level. It offers a magnificent view of the whole area of Rijeka’s Old Town. This fortress dates back to the 13th century but is thought to also have been a place of importance during Roman and earlier times. It has switched hands throughout the centuries but is still there today for us to appreciate. You can find a nice restaurant within to have a coffee or there’s plenty of space to spread out and get a wonderful view of Rijeka and the Adriatic Sea below. Best of all, it’s free!

St. Vitus Cathedral:

It’s said that a church has been on this site since the Middle Ages but the St. Vitus Cathedral we see today has its roots planted in the 17th century. It’s definitely a unique church in this region, as it’s the only large Baroque rotunda in Croatia. Admire the architecture and take a look inside!

Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary and Leaning Tower:

Another unique and historical sight within the city’s center is the Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. It wasn’t always a church. Dating back to the 1st century, it served as a thermal bath. It’s thought that around the 5th or 6th centuries it was converted into a church and slowly transformed into what we see today. Take a gander inside and then gaze up at the slightly leaning tower.

Old Town and the Promenade:

You can sense there is so much history when you stroll through these streets, which I recommend you do. Take your time, and enjoy!

What to Eat in Rijeka:

Milnar:

This is actually a small chain pastry shop which you can find throughout different cities in Croatia. The glorious aroma that wafts from the entrance is too enticing to pass up. Plus, you cannot beat the price!! We bought 8 pastries for 56 kn – that’s around €8. Heaven for €1, how can you possibly say no?? We can recommend any of the following; Cherry, Raspberry croissants, Vanilla cherry, Potato cake stick, pizza calzones and of course the famous Cheese burek. I don’t think you can go wrong here, everything was fantastic!

Papalina:

Papaline are small fish that you eat as a whole! We found this adorable little cafe and unfortunately they don’t serve food until later in the day but everything about this place made me want to stay!

As you can see, the city may not be have the wow factors that Split and Dubronovik possess, but it has its own hidden gems and is a great quiet place to take a break from the crazy go, go, go part of your vacation and enjoy the northern coast of Croatia!
