Location & Accessibility
Description of the hotel’s location
Situated on the stunning Railay Beach in Krabi, the Sand Sea Resort is beach front with access to both East and West Railay beaches. You can only access Railay by boat so you will need to grab a long tail boat from one of the mainland areas such as Ao Nong or even from Phuket. We came from Phuket and it cost ฿1200 per person which included a 1.5 hour ferry ride, a taxi to a second pier and then a long tail boat to Railay.
Proximity to transportation hubs, attractions, and amenities
While Railay can only be accessed by boat, this doesn’t mean there isn’t anything to do on the island. It has some of the top climbing spots in the world. If you are a thrill seeker, make sure you check those tours out. If you prefer to lay back and relax, you can also visit fertility caves, bat caves and beautiful lagoons.
Railay has a walking street that’s full of food stands, cafes, restaurants, vender shops for clothing and more. They also have tattoo shops, tons of smoke shops and laid back bars. Railay walking street turns into a full on party during night life and it’s a vibe for sure.
You can also arrange island hopping tours easily from Railay. These can take you to many of the nearby islands, including our favorite Hong Island. Highly recommend spending one of your days island hopping if you have the time. Rent a luxury long tail boat, have lunch and enjoy the taste of paradise.
Accommodation Features
Room types and amenities offered
The first thing you need to decide when choosing a room type when staying at Sand Sea Resort is if you prefer sunrise or sunset. This will then lead you to choosing the type of accommodation that best fits your needs. Here you can see they offer both and how they’re broken down.
SUNSET:
Sand sea resort have the bungalows and suites at the resort are well-equipped with a minibar,
refrigerator and TV with cable channels. Hot shower facilities and toiletries are provided in each en suite bathroom.
SUNRISE:
Inspired by northern Thai style homes, Sunrise Tropical Resort had created and decorated 44 tranquil shelters situated in harmony with their natural surrounding. All of the resort’s luxurious rooms are tastefully designed with modern facilities and amenities specially selected for our exclusive guest.
Workspace availability and quality
There are no dedicated working areas that we saw. The rooms do have desks you can work from and you could set up by the pool or in the beach front restaurant as well.
Internet speed and reliability
Sadly the Wifi was in and out every single day. I understand this is technically still a remote island, but my eSIM never had any issues which made me question why a resorts internet could have so many issues.
Noise levels and privacy
Thankfully we never had any noise issues during our stay at Sand Sea Resort. Our room was on the corner on the main walking path so I was concerned we might hear people but there was never a problem. Privacy was also never an issue. There were dark curtains to pull for privacy and we never felt exposed to the rest of the resort in any way.
Facilities & Services
On-site facilities such as gyms, pools, co-working spaces, etc.
Restaurant
Th Sunset restaurant is the onsite resort restaurant. It is the same location that the breakfast buffet is served. They serve lunch and dinner as well but we only had the breakfast so cannot speak from experience on those meals. They also serve fresh fruit juices and smoothies during the day which we did enjoy.
Gym
While technically they can claim to have a gym it’s really the “fitness – minimart”. The fitness part is more focused on the kayak and climbing rental equipment. There is a bench, treadmills and a squat rack. It is open from 8:00- 20:00.
Pools
There are two pools on site. The first is the larger and main pool. This is the beach swimming pool or the sunset pool. The second is the smaller one, and is known as the garden swimming pool or the sunrise pool.
Spa
Traditional Sand sea spa focuses on circulation and pressure points, promoting internal health as well as muscular flexibility. Treatment often begins with the feet and gradually moves upwards towards the head. The body is gently arranged into four positions (face-down, face-up, side, and sitting position), which enables the therapist to perform a variety of exercises that would be otherwise unworkable. Rhythmic compressions, rolling of limbs, and gentle rocking are Thai massage methods employed in order to relax and realign energies in the body. Please check out our available packages below. We personally did not attend so cannot attest to the quality of the services or even the list of services provided as they’re lacking from the website.
Quality of services provided (housekeeping, front desk, etc.)
The staff were very friendly and helpful during checkin. Beds are freshly made and new towels, glasses and things are provided each morning. Breakfast is included and they have a buffet styled set up with beach front views.
Value for Money
Pricing compared to similar accommodations in the area
There are a few resorts on Railay beach and Sand Sea Resort is probably in the lower price range than the other ones on the island. It has a prime location and has only one resort in between it and the walking street. I would say its a good value for cost but if you want more luxury than you can look at the higher priced resorts such as Rayavadee which isn’t directly on Railay but on Phra Nang. You can walk there easily from the resort.
Inclusion of value-added services or perks
Welcome drink upon arrival and a fresh cold towel after the journey was very welcomed. The only other inclusion is the breakfast. Everything else is extra cost.
Our Experience & Thoughts
Personal experience and impressions
Overall we had a pretty average impression by Sand Sea resort. It isn’t luxury but it isn’t a low end establishment either. We really enjoyed the location and the proximity to the walking street. We loved having both eat and west beach access and for the most part it was a great stay. The facilities could be updated and cleaner. We were also told not to ever leave our balcony door open or monkeys would come into the room so we didn’t get to enjoy it much.
Recommendations and tips for future guests
Remember that Railay can only be accessed by boat so make sure you check the times for arrival before booking. Plan a few days here to enjoy the beach, the walking street, the surrounding areas and a day tour on the luxury long tail boats.
