History:
In 1869, the State Agricultural and Mechanical Society of South Carolina was created to sponsor a State Fair.
As early as the 1720s, agricultural fairs held in the South Carolina Lowcountry had been the forerunners to the fair that is now enjoyed by hundreds of thousands of guests each fall in Columbia.
During the early 19th century, local and regional agricultural societies sponsored fairs featuring competitive events with prizes for the best crops, livestock, and homemaking skills. In 1839, the State Agricultural Society was organized to establish a statewide fair, and state fairs were held in Columbia from 1841 to 1845 on the State House grounds and again from 1856 to 1861.
The revived State Fair, held on the pre-Civil War state fairgrounds on Elmwood Avenue on property provided by the city of Columbia, not only promoted the agricultural interests of the state, but it also recognized the need to encourage industrial development.

When to Visit
The South Carolina state Fair typically takes place in mid-October. The event is held annually at the South Carolina State Fairgrounds and features a variety of attractions, food, and entertainment. It’s always a good idea to check the official fair website for the most up-to-date information on dates and events. Choosing the best day(s) to visit can also be helped with their special discounts and events information.

Seniors (55 & Older)
$15 at the gate every day except Seniors Day. *Seniors Day admission is $5.
Military Appreciation Day
Active and retired military and their dependents (with proper military identification cards) will be admitted FREE. Dependent children 14 years old and older must present ID.

Every Day Promotions
5 & Under Free All children 5 and under will be admitted FREE all 12 days of the S.C. State Fair.
Pay-One-Price (POP) Ride Days The S.C. State Fair will once again feature Pay-One-Price (POP) ride days every day. Patrons can enjoy one day of unlimited rides by exchanging a ride voucher for a POP wristband at specially marked ticket booths.
This year (2024) , every single ride is eligible, ensuring that you can maximize your enjoyment and make unforgettable memories.
Special themed days at the fair
Lunch Bunch
Join the lunch bunch! From Monday – Friday, between noon and 2 p.m., pop in and out of the S.C. State Fair for lunch with a special lunch bunch ticket, available from noon-2 p.m. each weekday (except Wednesday, Oct. 9). Pay your entry fee and receive a refundable $20 ticket. Return to the ticket booth with the ticket by 2 p.m. to get your money back.
Sensory-Friendly Morning
From 10 a.m.- noon, children and adults with autism or sensory processing disorders and one companion are welcome to enter the fairgrounds, as our guest, up to one hour before the gates officially open and participate in Sensory-Friendly Morning. Click here for more details.

Free admission for persons with life-long, developmental, or physical disabilities (and one companion).

- Poutine burger: consists of a single, flame-grilled burger topped with fries, cheese curds and rich gravy on a homemade bun.
- Peach cobbler funnel cake — with or without a generous sprinkling of powdered sugar and cinnamon
- Funnel Dog: A hot dog wrapped in a funnel cake blanket, topped in powdered sugar and served with maple syrup on the side for dipping.
- Fried taco: literally, a taco that has been deep fried

Special events: rodeos, tractor pulls, and demolition derbies
At the rodeo, cowboys and cowgirls showcase their skills in bull riding, barrel racing, and roping, delivering heart-stopping action and showcasing the traditions of the American West.
The tractor pulls bring raw horsepower to the forefront, as powerful tractors compete to pull heavy loads the farthest distance, thrilling fans with roaring engines and intense competition.
Meanwhile, the demolition derby is a crowd favorite, where drivers crash and bash their cars in a chaotic display of automotive destruction until only one vehicle remains running. These special events add a high-energy, action-packed element to the fair, giving visitors a taste of classic American entertainment.

Cow shows
At the South Carolina State Fair, cow shows are a highlight, showcasing the region’s agricultural heritage and celebrating the hard work of local farmers and 4-H participants. These shows feature a variety of cattle breeds, from beef to dairy cows, with participants competing in categories like best in breed, showmanship, and market classes.
It’s not just about the animals’ appearance however. Judges assess the overall health, grooming, and handling skills of the exhibitors, often young people who have raised these animals for months. The cow shows offer a unique opportunity for fairgoers to learn more about livestock care, the importance of agriculture in South Carolina, and the dedication it takes to raise award-winning cattle. They also provide a fun and educational experience, connecting urban visitors with the state’s rural roots.
Swifty Swine Racing & Swimming Pigs
Always a favorite! Guests will be treated to an action-packed, fast-paced, high-energy program as “Swifty” the swimming pig plunges into an eight-foot tank, and four piglets compete for first place in a series of high-speed races. It’s the fastest pig race around!
Donkey & Mule Show
Come watch and cheer on mules and donkeys from full to miniature sizes as they compete in Coon Jumping, Driving, English, Western, Ranch, Trail, Speed and Costume Classes! Associations represented are The American Miniature Mule Association (TAMMA) and the North American Saddle Mule Donkey Association (NASMDA). Duck waterslide:
In the building housing the champion chickens, don’t miss the baby ducks. They slide down a short conveyor belt and splash into water, then climb back up and do it again. Also, say hello to the champion Gamecocks while you’re there.
Competitions: baking, crafts, and agricultural achievements
Home & Craft
Home arts, such as baking, cake decorating, canning, hobby crafts, quilting and sewing are among the many divisions found in the Moore Building each year as youth and adult exhibitors compete for a coveted blue ribbon.
Special displays, such as vintage bridal fashions or an antique kitchen, are also featured each year during the fair.

Student Art
The works of some of the state’s most talented young artists will be on display in the Cantey Building. Young protégés will enjoy taking in the handiwork of their peers in 2-D, 3-D and photography divisions. This year’s student art will feature Art of the Camellia, which blends art and horticulture to offer an added educational benefit for students in grades K-12.

Celebrate in the Heritage Village
A visit to the South Carolina State Fair’s Heritage Village offers a glimpse into the past and frontier times. Explore reconstructed historical structures, observe traditional crafts and demonstrations and learn about the daily lives of early settlers. Heritage Village aims to recreate the atmosphere and ambiance of a frontier community. Encounter reenactors dressed in period costumes who can provide information about the challenges and customs of the time. Heritage Village offers a tangible connection to history.

Commerford Petting Zoo
Commerford and Sons petting zoo is a family-owned and operated petting zoo featuring domestic animals and hand-raised exotic animals that just love attention. The Comerford’s have been raising animals for more than 50 years. Guests are invited to get up close and meet members of the Commerford petting zoo family. Don’t forget to wash those hands afterwards!
Interactive exhibits
Scarecrow Decorating Contest
The S. C. State Fair needs scarecrows to protect the fruits and veggies in the Ellison Building during fair.
Each year, family teams register to participate before the fair begins. The judges chose the top five concepts. On the day of the contest, families bring their creative ideas. The five teams are given one hour to construct their scarecrow and the agriculture staff votes on the winner.

Are there ATM’s on the grounds?
Yes. ATM’s will be located throughout the fairgrounds.
Clear Bag Policy
To provide a safe, enjoyable environment for all attendees, the South Carolina State Fair has a mandatory clear bag policy. This policy is similar to those implemented throughout Columbia, S.C. and the country, complying with a new level of security expected of large, heavily-attended events and festivals.
- This year, all bags must be clear and not bigger in size than 12″x6″x12″.
- Bag logos can be no larger than 4.5″x3.4″ and can only be displayed on one side of a permissible clear bag.
- Medically necessary items may be approved after proper inspection.
- Diaper bags accompanied with a baby may be approved after proper inspection.
- Pre-approved exceptions may be allowed, such as for camera equipment or food allergies. See pre-approval form linked to this webpage. 24-hours notice required.
- All bags will be subject to search upon arrival and any bags that exceed the permitted size will not be allowed in.
Photography and Gear allowed?
Photography and video are allowed on the fairgrounds during the 12 days of the fair as long as the following guidelines are adhered to. However, if you wish to bring in gear, you need to submit a request form at least 24 hours in advanced.

Drones and unmanned aircraft systems
Out of concern for our guests’ safety drones and unmanned aircraft systems, not contracted by the S.C. State Fair, are strictly forbidden. Fairground events are close to Hamilton-Owens airport, Williams-Brice stadium, and other public gatherings where drones may pose a threat to safety and security.
