When to Visit

Deciding when to visit Bangkok depends on your preferences and what you aim to experience. Bangkok experiences a tropical climate, characterized by hot and humid weather year-round. The peak tourist season is from November to March when the weather is cooler and drier, making it ideal for exploring the city’s attractions comfortably. However, this is also when the city is most crowded, and accommodation prices may be higher. Alternatively, visiting during the shoulder seasons of April to June and September to October offers a good balance of fewer crowds and reasonable weather. Just be prepared for occasional rainfall. The wet season, from July to August, sees frequent rain showers but also tends to be less crowded, making it a good option for budget travelers. Ultimately, the best time to visit Bangkok depends on your preferences for weather, crowds, and budget.

Transportation

Navigating Bangkok’s bustling streets is made easy with its extensive public transportation system. The city offers a variety of options including the BTS Skytrain, MRT subway, buses, boats, and tuk-tuks, allowing travelers to explore every corner with ease. The BTS Skytrain and MRT subway are efficient and convenient modes of transport, connecting major attractions and neighborhoods throughout the city. Additionally, Bangkok’s extensive network of buses provides affordable transportation to areas not covered by the rail systems. If you have a lot of luggage or simply prefer some privacy (and AC) the I highly recommend downloading the GRAB app before you arrive. Prices are cheap compared to any other big cities in the world.

For a unique experience, travelers can hop on a boat along the Chao Phraya River or explore the city’s canals by water taxi. Tuk-tuks, although popular among tourists, offer a fun and adventurous way to navigate the city’s bustling streets but they can come with a price tag. With its diverse transportation options, getting around Bangkok is both convenient and accessible, making it a breeze for travelers to explore all that this vibrant city has to offer.

Where to Eat

Lhong Tou Cafe

Lhong Tou Cafe in Bangkok’s vibrant Chinatown is a captivating blend of heritage and contemporary charm, situated within the historic Lhong 1919 complex. It has become quite a popular spot and can have a long queue on a regular basis. One of the main draws of the cafe is the high top booths. However, there are only 3 hightops and 6 tables so you have to get lucky if you want a top booth. We wanted to do a food hopping tour throughout chinatown so we just had a quick drink and a bite and honestly it was nothing that special in our opinion. Perhaps the larger meals are better.

7-Eleven

My Americans might struggle with hearing this but yes, you can actually find good food at the 7-Elevens in Thailand! I do mean full meals. However, you can also find tons of unique snack choices here to try new things. Finally, something that has become really popular among budget backpackers are the toasties you can get 2 for less than a dollar and have them toast it for you!

Street Vendors

Saving the best for last. While many people tend to be wary of the dangers of “street meat” I can tell you that some of the best food ive had in my life has come from the street vendors in Thailand. While of course I cannot 100% promise you will have zero effects (everyones stomach is different, and random chance happens), I can say that the majority of experienced travelers will agree with me that the best and cheapest food BY FAR, will be found at the street carts. If you are still hesitant then I recommend trying the market vendors at the ICONSIAM or Emsphere mentioned above. It’s authentic market food in a more controlled environment.

  1. The mix of activities is excellent–visiting the ancient city and enjoying rooftop mini golf sounds like a fun combination.

    1. Yes, I really love the diversity that’s offered in the city. They take pride in mixing the old cultural things with the newer modern trends. The rooftop golf was a blast!

  2. This is a fabulous, comprehensive post with everything you need to know when travelling to Bangkok. Great photos, well done. I love the seating arrangement at Lhong Tou Cafe. It is an excellent way to make more seating when real estate is at a premium.

    1. Oh thank you so much, so glad to hear you love it! Truly hope it helps people plan their visit 🙂 and I think the seating arrangement is brilliant, more places should implement it in areas where space can be limited. Its fun too !

    1. So so much to do in Bangkok! You could spend years there and still not see it all I think 🙂 we hope to go back for a third time (maybe a fourth and fifth too haha).

  3. Thank you for covering some of the off the beaten path temples. I’d love to visit Wat Sam Phran and get a bit further away from the crowds.

    1. Temples are something I truly enjoy visiting. The details, how unique each one truly is when you look closely at them, and yes some of the best ones are a little further out but it’s nice to get away from the crowds!

    1. Oh book the flight! It is one of my favorite countries in the world. Bangkok is a great place to start too before heading to the more remote areas and the beaches and islands after! 🙂

  4. So many great activities to do and so much yummy food to try. I would love to experience Songkran festivalmyself. It looks like there’s such a great atmosphere.

    1. The food is one of my absolute favorite things about Thailand 🙂 just always so many delicious things !! If you can plant a trip for Songkran I suggest trying it at least once, very unique experience.

  5. Wow! Thank you for sharing so many awesome experiences! It seems as if you’d never run out of fun things to do/see. Also, your photos are incredible!
