Maka Maka: Split
Maka Maka : Split
Wandering the streets to find smaller, local food places is still one of my favorite things to do. I truly believe the randomly found places often end up having the best food. Ironically enough, we were traveling in Split at the same time as my partner’s sister and her friend. She recommended Maka Maka and I suggested we go there the next day perhaps. Well wouldn’t you know, as we strolled aimlessly through the streets, what should we stumble upon: Maka Maka. It was fate!
DECOR:
The cafe is not all that large, and half their seating space is located on the alley out front. The inside is relatively simply done but quite cute. The tables are wooden and offer bench seats that wrap around the walls with an additional small “bar seating” by the front windows. The walls have ivy hanging down and that pair well with the giant round lamps hanging above each section. Outside they have two rows of small tables lined along a stone paved alley with trees that offer much needed protection from the summer sun. We opted to sit outside and it was quite nice.
AMBIANCE in Maka Maka:
It’s a very relaxed little cafe, which seems to be popular by the number of people who continuously stopped and inquired about a table or wait time. The alley way is next to a small raised seating area and is on a quiet intersection of alleyways. It’s a perfect brunch or lunch spot in my opinion.
SERVICE at Maka Maka:
The wait staff was quite friendly and checked in periodically. They were a bit slow but that was to be expected at a full and smaller establishment. We were never rushed and they were happy to bring us waters to help fight the spicy food and the summer heat.
TASTE:
Build your own bowls: like many popular cafes popping up these days, build your own bowls are on a rising trend that I don’t expect to stop anytime soon (thankfully!). I ordered my favorite combination bowl: sushi rice, crispy chicken, mango, avocado, spicy Hawaiian Mayo and a little creamy Mayo to top it off. Boy oh boy was it fantastic!! The chicken was tender and the breading was crunchy. The mango and avocado were very fresh and the sauces were delicious (although the spicy Mayo was very spicy so be careful if you aren’t a fan).
They also offer a variety of pre-made açaí & poke bowls, smoothies (try the tropical it was very good), and at dinner tons of sushi!
