Singapore is one of those places that I think sometimes gets overlooked with the rest of Southeast Asia. However, it truly has so much to offer.

From the iconic Marina Bay Sands and Gardens by the Bay to the bustling streets of Chinatown and Little India, this vibrant destination has something for every traveler. You will find world-class shopping on Orchard Road, unique wildlife at the Singapore Zoo, and you can indulge in the flavors of its famous hawker centers. Singapore has been on my travel list since I was very young and my father often went on business. I can tell you, it did not disappoint! Whether you’re here for business or leisure, Singapore promises an unforgettable adventure in the heart of Southeast Asia.

Currency: Singaporean Dollar SGD

Primary Language: Malay, English, Tamil and Singaporean Mandarin. We had zero troubles with English in any part of the city. All signs and menus are in English and the majority of spoken conversations we heard were also English. It is a very international country.

Driving: They drive on the left side or the road with the driver in the front right of the car.

When to Visit

Deciding when to visit Singapore depends on your preferences and what you aim to experience. Singapore sustains a tropical climate year-round, characterized by hot and extremely humid weather with occasional rain showers.

The peak tourist season is from November to March when the weather is cooler and drier. These months are ideal for outdoor activities and sightseeing. However, this is also when the city experiences higher tourist numbers and accommodation prices may be higher.

Alternatively, visiting during the shoulder seasons of April to June and September to October offers a good balance of fewer crowds and reasonable weather. Just be prepared for occasional rain showers, especially in the afternoon. The wettest months are typically from November to January.

However rain showers are usually brief and do not disrupt plans significantly. Ultimately, the best time to visit Singapore depends on your preferences for weather, crowds, and budget. With its year-round warm climate, Singapore is a destination that can be enjoyed at any time of the year. Our visit was during May 2024 and we had a few showers but they didn’t last long at all.

Transportation

Public transportation in Singapore is renowned for its efficiency, reliability, and convenience. Making it a breeze for locals and tourists alike to navigate the city.

The Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) system serves as the backbone of Singapore’s public transportation network, connecting various parts of the island with speed and ease. With an extensive network of lines and stations, the MRT offers seamless connectivity to key attractions, shopping districts, and residential areas.

In addition to the MRT, Singapore supports an extensive bus network that complements the rail system. This providies comprehensive coverage to areas not accessible by train.

Travelers can also opt for other modes of transport such as taxis or ride-hailing services like Grab. In addition, the iconic Singapore River taxi offers scenic views of the city’s skyline.

With its well-connected and reliable public transportation system, exploring Singapore’s vibrant neighborhoods, cultural attractions, and culinary delights is both convenient and enjoyable.

Accommodation

Habyt Cantonment – formerly Hmlet Cantonment:

Singapore was one of our busiest itineraries so we knew we wouldn’t spend quite as much time in the accommodation. Therefore our main priorities were easy connections to the public transport system, clean and safe. We found Habyt Cantonment – formerly Hmlet Cantonment – to be decently located. It is about 30 minutes by public or 10 by Grab from many of the main attractions.

10 Cent Pancake

First Korean Coin Pancake Café In Singapore, inspired by the famous Ten Cent Coin pancakes in Korea. At the heart of their menu are the Korean Coin Cakes ($5), which come with a cheesy mozzarella filling. The owners actually learnt how to make them from Japan itself, not Korea.

LiHo Tea

This “do it yourself” run polaroid Photo Booth shop was such a unique and cool find in Haji Lane. There are multiple rooms with different types of cameras and a variety of backdrops. you can also choose from a wide assortment of props to enhance the photos. You start by selecting a certain booth, the from countless “frame” options and the number of photos you want. Take your props and friends and have a blast!

Grand Prix Racetrack

Here is a quick breakdown of the parks in Universal.

• Hollywood: This is the main street entrance, where you come into the park. Be sure to walk to the end and take in the views over the water.
• New York: Take a walk down the backstreets of New York; they give the perfect opportunity for photos!
• Sci-Fi City: You will find the most thrilling rides in Sci-Fi City. So start here to give you an adrenaline rush for your day and have shorter lines! You can also do a meet and greet with a Transformer, a pretty neat experience.

• The Lost World: Otherwise known as

Not only are these the most thrilling rides, but they also get the busiest! So if you want to beat the crowds, then plan ahead and make these your first stops! Battlestar Galactica is two rides in one and is not to be missed if you enjoy rollercoasters. We usually start our day here when queues are short. This duelling coaster features a blue inverted coaster representing the Cylons and the seated red coaster representing the Humans. If you don’t like going upside down, stick with Humans.

Sentosa Island + Palawan Beach

However, be warned it does come with price. The sun loungers on the beach start at $200 SGD minimum spend. While the pool sun beds are $300SGD and the private pool cabanas start at $600 SGD minimum spend. This does all go towards food and drinks. Which are on the pricer end but if you want to avoid this go between the hours of 9:30-13:00 before the reservation slots begin.

The Jewel at Singapore Airport

This complex is on a scale only a few cities in the world can afford to undertake. It’s a visionary undertaking that includes a rain vortex, retail shops, hotels, entertainment, airport lounges, check-in, and dining. The Jewel complex spans 135,000 square meters and comprises ten stories – five stories above and five below ground.

On entry from Terminal 1 or curbside or the SkyTrain in the basement, you’ll walk into a cavernous plaza that steers you come face to face with the signature attraction. The jaw-dropping Vortex “waterfall” is the main event. At this point, you have a decision to make – walk around, go up or down. It doesn’t really matter as you’ll do it all. 

Jewel Changi Vortex Waterfall

As you walk towards the HSBC Rain Vortex it pays to bear in mind that you’re looking at the world’s largest indoor waterfall at 40m high! Approach the vortex the more perceptive of us may detect something is “off” or “missing” – noise.

The vortex makes virtually no noise and it’s designed deliberately like that. The reason is that the base of the vortex is a funnel that guides the water down rather than normal water hitting water splashing impact.

At the bottom, called the Immersion Garden, you can look up and be dazzled by the size of the vortex as well as enjoy the cooling mist effect.

For something a little different, you can also catch the Skytrain which connects all the terminals in the complex together. You’ll need to catch it for the leg between Terminals 3 and 2 to go through Jewel. You’ll get to run right alongside the HSBC Rain Vortex – the world’s largest indoor waterfall! 

Jewel Changi Airport Canopy Bridge

This is a must-do activity when visiting Jewel, but surprisingly few travellers do it. An 8 SGD ticket can be purchased at a self-serve terminal and you can walk straight onto the bridge.

Manulife Sky Nets – Walking and Bouncing

Jewel Changi Airport features two sets of nets. These are perfect for both adults and children alike to experience. You can choose to walk a net that is 25 metres above a void or bounce along a 250 metre long net that is sure to tire your kids out before a long flight. Brilliant!
